Another live shot. This is from when we played at Voda a couple of years back. Not exactly the choicest live-music venue in Vancouver. I think they booked us as an experiment, and then proceeded to never host live music again. The photo is by
Rebecca Blissett.
The door to the gone-but-not-forgotten Basement Winter studio, formerly located in Jonathan Anderson's basement in White Rock, B.C. Jon now operates
Buena Vista Audio.

Kyle with his trusty Peavey.
Guitars. Some are mine, some are
Jonathan's.
Kyle playing the Hammond organ that graced many of the songs on
Under the Waterline.

Me. I'm probably not actually playing anything (hence the headphones being off my ears).

Kyle (playing Cam's bass) at Basement Winter.
I also came across a few photos that Gregg took when we were recording
Under the Waterline at Jonathan Anderson's old studio, Basement Winter, back in 2002-03. You can find more pictures from those sessions
here.

In preparing to have my whole goddamn hard drive wiped clean first thing tomorrow morning (you might detect a trace of frustration in my tone), I came across some old photos. Here's one of us playing live. This was probably at the Purple Onion, but I couldn't tell you exactly when.
Don't forget to tune in to 101.9 FM between 5 and 6 p.m. on Thursday. Gregg, Michaela, and I will be guests on
CiTR's
Local Kids Make Good. In addition to playing a few tracks from
Under the Waterline, we'll spin some of our favourite local bands and also a few numbers from various Hinterland members' solo and side projects. I'll preview a selection from the upcoming
Windows '78 demo, we'll introduce Cameron's Solaris project, and I believe Michaela will be digging something out of the
Electrosonics vault.
I love the work of
Jim Woodring. Perhaps you will love it too.
I don't usually listen to Internet radio stations, but
this one is really cool. I am going to send them some Hinterland tunes.
No! Tell me it isn't so! According to
Pitchfork, yet another of my favourite artists, M83, is playing Seattle (twice!) but not coming here! And before everyone gets all "Well, why don't you just drive down to Seattle" on me, let me remind you that Seattle is a good two hours away from here, and I have to be at work first thing the next morning. I'm going to go cry now.
I guess I'll take a break from plugging English bands long enough to remind y'all that Hinterland's very own album is available all over the damn place.
A lot of people seem to think it is good. Also, we are nice folks and we would like to be able to afford to put another CD out someday. Which is why I point out that, in Vancouver,
Under the Waterline is available at fine retail outlets such as A&B Sound, Zulu Records, and Scratch. Those outside of Vancouver can find it
here.
Here is a picture of
the Delays. Their debut CD,
Faded Seaside Glamour, is out now. Go buy it before all your friends do. Then, when everyone is talking about what a great song "Nearer Than Heaven" is, you'll have something to say.
Michaela has been freaking out about this
Boobah madness lately, so I thought I'd post this picture. They look sort of like members of the
Barbapapa family. The purple one looks a bit like
Grimace.
The
Purple Onion, a Vancouver venue where Hinterland played many of its earliest gigs (and even a couple of recent ones), has been sold, and it looks as if, even if it stays open under that name, it won't be the same place. This could be a good thing, since the Purple Onion, cool place though it was, was never known as a hot spot for live music. Maybe the new owners will change that. Or maybe they'll decide that what Vancouver really needs is yet another in a seemingly endless parade of dance clubs. Time will tell. Read about it
here.

Before she joined Hinterland, Michaela was involved with a project called Recurring, which also featured several other ex-members of
the Electrosonics. Will we ever hear a full album by Recurring? I don't know, but you can download one song, "Subharmonic Dixie",
here.
Our song "Portrait of My Invention" is currently sitting at number three on
New Music Canada's Space Pop Top 10.
Be sure to tune in to the
CBC Radio 3 broadcast this Saturday night for a profile of Hinterland.
